How much period bleeding is normal?

Written by the Zoya team · Medically reviewed by Dr. Saima Gulnaz, MBBS, FCPS · September 2026

"Normal" period bleeding covers a wider range than many people expect — here's what the range looks like, and what's worth a doctor's visit.

How much bleeding is normal?

On a daily basis, if on average you're changing 3 to 4 pads, it's considered normal — that works out to about 30 to 80 millilitres. A normal period typically lasts from 2 to 7 days.

What counts as a heavy period?

A period is considered heavy if your daily pad use increases compared with your usual experience, if you're changing pads in under a 2-hour gap due to soaking, if you pass large clots, or if your number of bleeding days exceeds 7.

Why am I passing clots?

Blood clots — sometimes described as liver-like tissue — usually occur when the period flow is heavier than normal.

Is it normal for period blood to change colour?

Yes. Period blood may be bright red, brown, or dark red, almost black. Don't worry about it.

Is very light flow normal?

An occasionally lighter period can be normal, particularly when your cycles are otherwise regular. Persistent changes may need evaluation for hormonal or other causes.

A lighter period can also happen because of hormonal changes, contraception, stress, or changes in your menstrual cycle. If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test.

More questions our doctors have answered

Is it normal to bleed for 40 days straight after delivery?

Postpartum bleeding is a different pattern from a period, and "normal" is judged differently. Bleeding after pregnancy is not normal if it's heavy, or associated with foul-smelling discharge, abdominal pain, or low blood pressure — visit immediately if any of those apply.

When should I worry about postnatal bleeding specifically?

Soaking a pad in under an hour, abdominal pain or dizziness, or passing large clots after delivery all need immediate medical attention. (For bleeding earlier in pregnancy itself, see our guide to bleeding in early pregnancy.)

Can I use tampons for postpartum bleeding?

No — don't use tampons for postpartum bleeding. Use sanitary pads until your doctor advises it's safe to switch.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you're changing pads in under a 2-hour gap due to soaking, passing large clots, or bleeding for more than 7 days. Clots that are frequent, painful, and occur in every period are also worth a visit — as is significant pain, dizziness or fainting, periods that repeatedly become much lighter or irregular, periods that stop unexpectedly, or bleeding between periods or after sex.

Any bleeding with a positive pregnancy test needs checking by a doctor the same day, even if it's light or stops.
